Koh Samui - Scootering the Islands

Undoubtedly, scooter is the best way to get know Thailand - this also applies on all respects to Koh Samui..

The island only takes a bit more than an hour to drive around. Fortunately it wasn't the high season during our stay, so we got chance to enjoy some of the islands nicest parts without any rush. Here're a few spots and places we found during the four days and couple of hundred k's on a scooter:

Hin Ta and Hin Yai ("Grandmother and Grandfather stones").

These odd rocks near Lamai beach come with a story - according to the legend, they're the remains of an old couple cast into stone after a shipwreck following a storm at the nearby sea.

In reality, the stones in question consist of a phallic rock formation and its female counterpart, amongst a pretty interesting natural formation of rocks:

The best about this historic & spectacular sight is that the beach in question is arguably one of the best spots for enjoying the sunset on Samui :

Another recommended spot in different travel sites was the Big Buddha Temple. The temple built in the 70's was apparently about to fall apart (or under repair) at the time of our visit. Would rate the whole experience 3/5, nothing too special - probably the most memorable bit about the BBT was the sunset, and an obnoxious Farang* idiot with a Thai wife with no respect whatsoever for the local buddhist holy sites.

You can't but think about how much tourists take the local culture for granted, and how commoditized the local historic sights have become.

Remember fellow tourists and travellers - * Be considerate *
