Koh Samui - Highway Pro Tips & Secret Waterfalls

Scooters are fun, because they take you to places - including secret places. They also have a high potential to be sources of unexpected travel experiences and memories.

First of all - be sure to inspect your scooter when you rent it. Besides checking the overall condition (and taking photos to provide proof of the condition prior to renting) and the lock, also be sure to heck the tires.

A thing you should know is that rental scams (for scooters, motorcycles and jetskis) are quite popular in Thailand, and come in many forms. The rental agency can try to scam your deposit money (claiming that you caused some damage that was clearly pre-existing), blackmail you for money (if you have your passport as the deposit), or even steal the scooter and try to make you reimburse the whole thing. Just be careful and check online, what others say about the agency your rent from. The local police (or the tourist police) won't be of much use if you get into trouble (unless you bribe them).

Things can also happen suddenly while on the road. The roads are in varying condition, ranging from good to really shitty. One thing that will definitely change your travel plans is flat tire - which is really easy to achieve when riding tandem on a scooter:

(Yes, it's a must experience!)

But not to worry, flat tires happen all the time on the island. Fixing a flat is actually pretty cheap and easy on Koh Samui:

1) Relax and take a deep breath
2) Go to the closest local house / shop to tell someone
3) Watch them fix it / someone they fetch to fix it

And if you can't get enough, you can get another flat, and repeat the process (we did)!

Dogs are one thing you won't miss in Koh Samui. They are everywhere.

Another central part of Samui are definitely the beaches. Besides the main beaches with constant hassle with proponents of thai massage, there are also nice spots hidden away from the general tourist areas. If you must get a massage, don't do it at the beach (even if it's cheaper).

Chaweng was a bigger town and it seemed that all the partyplaces were located in here. Nice place to spend evening.

Hin Lat waterfall was the most beautiful spot on the island. A couple of kilometers walk in the jungle ended in this rocky place. We went all way up to see the waterfall in its full lenght and found a perfect place to get refressed. Let the pictures tell the story:

(Lovely creatures along the path)

It also pays to strive a bit further than your common tourist adventurer. In Hin Lat, climbing just a bit further up from the first waterfall (more like a stream, really) gets you to a secluded, bigger one packed with an extra level of awesomeness. Words would be too boring to describe - check it out for yourself :

And on the way down, just to give you an idea of the climb:

And minor spidermanly acomplishments :
