After Umalas, we spent a few days near Kuta, probably the most touristic part of Bali. Wasn't really our favourite cup of tea, but the nearby areas proved good for shopping and the location was closer to the international medical centre. The main areas in Kuta - the beach and the long Legian street (the main street) - proved to be a place to cater for the main tourist vices, with equal downsides - Drunken Aussies, magic mushrooms and counterfeit Viagra would be the likely encounters, with their eager solicitors around pretty much every corner.
Kuta may cater to the surf-hungry, party-seeking travellers on a budget. But for us, the best part of the trip was still ahead - up North in the Town of Ubud which represents a less busy, more traditional side of Bali.
Crazy bags of sugar at the bus station, and first class sleep on a first class bus ride
After a bouncy bus ride with a strong reek of gasoline we arrived to the city late in the evening. Ubud was calm and quiet, and rice fields enveloped in green greeted us among the sunset:
Ubudy proved to be a spot for some good hangout and cuisine hunting. The streets are filled with hidden gems - we found a couple of great cafés with talented baristas, single-origin coffees with the drip of your liking - Animalia and Seniman to list mention few (the latter being perhaps slightly overrated and bloated by tripadvisor reviews).
A clear favourite among the cafes was a raw food cafe / restaurant Clear Cafe. The decor and good food with a twist, combined with a great ambiance made it one of the staples of the visit. Mylk shakes are a must - and that's the right spelling :)
Clear cafe - cozy wood surfaces, smoky glass and great food
